The Proximity Problem How Your Environment Affects Your Growth

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from medicine, content creation, and mentorship, it’s this:
Your environment is either building you… or slowly breaking you.
People often ask me,
“Sermed, what’s the fastest way to grow as a creator or professional?”
And they expect me to say something about algorithms, equipment, or strategy.
But the truth is far simpler — and far more powerful:
Growth is a proximity game.
Who you surround yourself with, what you consume daily, and the energy in your environment shape your identity more than you realize.
Let me explain why.
We Become What We’re Close To
During my years in medicine, I saw how environment impacts humans on every level — habits, stress, decisions, relationships, even physiology.
And when I entered the creator world, I noticed the same thing:
Two people with similar talent can have completely different outcomes simply because of who and what they are surrounded by.
If you’re around:
people who complain
people who don’t build
people who fear taking risks
people who stay quiet rather than express their ideas
…it’s only a matter of time before you think, behave, and believe the same things.
Your proximity shapes your mindset, and your mindset shapes your growth.
The Hidden Environments You Don’t Notice
People assume “environment” only means physical space — your room, your office, your city.
But your real environment is much bigger:
1. The voices you listen to daily
Podcasts, videos, colleagues, friends.
They influence your thinking more than you realize.
2. The creators you follow
If you follow low-value content, you start creating low-value content.
3. The people you speak to most
They either expand your ambition or shrink it.
4. The energy in your immediate surroundings
Disorganised, noisy, stressful environments drain your creativity.
Your growth is constantly being shaped by these invisible forces — even when you’re unaware of it.
Proximity Creates Momentum (Or Removes It)
I’ve mentored creators who didn’t have a talent problem… They had a proximity problem.
Once we changed who they learned from, what content they consumed, and who they interacted with — their growth accelerated instantly.
It wasn’t magic.
It was alignment.
When you’re close to people who are building, improving, and thinking bigger, you can’t help but move in the same direction.
Proximity creates momentum — and momentum creates confidence.
The Cost of Staying in the Wrong Environment
Let me be brutally honest:
Some of you aren’t stuck because of lack of potential. You’re stuck because of proximity.
You’re surrounded by people who:
normalize mediocrity
discourage ambition
fear risk
don’t understand your goals
think content creation is “silly”
prefer comfort over growth
And here you are — trying to build something extraordinary with people who can’t even imagine it.
Your environment shouldn’t require you to shrink yourself just to fit in.
The Solution: Curate Your Environment With Intention
The good news?
You don’t need to move cities or quit your job to fix your environment.
You just need to reshape your proximity.
Start with these:
1. Upgrade the voices in your head
Consume content from creators and leaders who inspire you, challenge you, and make you think bigger.
2. Audit your relationships
You don’t need to cut people off — but you do need to increase your proximity to the ones who elevate you.
3. Build a small circle of ambitious peers
Even two or three people who share your goals can change your entire trajectory.
4. Create a space where your creativity can breathe
A clean, organised workspace does more for your mind than you realize.
5. Be intentional with what you follow online
Your feed should be a reflection of who you want to become — not who you used to be.
When I began my creator journey, my environment was not built for growth. Most people around me couldn’t understand why I wanted to make videos or build something beyond medicine.
But I changed my proximity — slowly, intentionally. I surrounded myself with people who thought bigger, operated with purpose, and were building something meaningful.
That shift changed everything.
My confidence grew.
My ideas sharpened.
My ambition expanded.
My growth accelerated.
Not because I became more talented…
But because my environment started feeding my possibility instead of limiting it.
Final Thoughts
If you feel stuck, unmotivated, or unsure of your direction, don’t immediately blame your skills or circumstances.
First, look at your proximity.
Your environment is influencing you every second — shaping your habits, your identity, and your future.
Choose carefully what you allow close to you. Because the right environment doesn’t just support growth — it creates it.
And if you want mentorship, clarity, and a community of ambitious creators to reshape your proximity, that’s exactly what my course and programs are designed to provide.
Your environment is a mirror of your future. Make sure it reflects the version of you that you’re trying to become.
